Parents FAQ

Can a student transfer classes from another school? Are summer classes necessary?
Yes; check with Admissions & Records for more information. Summer classes are not necessary but may help students reach their academic goals faster.

Do professors take attendance in class?
Some professors take attendance while others do not. A professor’s attendance policy is outlined in his or her syllabus so students are encouraged to review all syllabi.

How do I obtain a copy of my student’s grades?
The College is prohibited from releasing certain information to parents without the permission of the student, grades included. By federal law (The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, FERPA, also known as the Buckley Amendment), students over the age of 18 are considered responsible adults and are allowed to determine who will receive information about them. What kind of academic support do you offer?
All professors hold office hours when students can go see them for help. There are also tutors available to students on campus free of charge. The college also supports students with reading/writing/English centers, the Advise 5 mentoring program, and much more.

Do students need a computer on campus?
There are a number of computers available to students on campus in the different computer labs; hours vary from semester to semester. Laptops are not necessary but again, some students find them useful. The Folsom campus has Wifi available.

How do students apply for financial aid?
The Financial Aid Office will help you through the financial aid process. We encourage all families to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). To file the FAFSA online, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov

What scholarships are available?
We have numerous scholarship opportunities. Check with the Foundation office at 916-608-6705 for more information.

What services are available for students who get sick?
Students who get sick on Folsom campus should go to the Wellness Center, located in Student Services (Aspen Hall/FL1). For more information on health services, click here.

Where do visitors park on campus?
Visitors can park in any space that is not designated for staff or faculty. Daily parking permits are $1 and are available at kiosks located in the parking lots.

What activities are available for students on campus?
Folsom Lake College has a number of student clubs and organizations on campus; the office of Student Life also schedules a variety of regular activities.
