"...FLC did a great job preparing me for my future."

Brian Tobin

When did you start taking classes with Folsom Lake College (FLC)?

I started taking classes at FLC in the fall of 2004.

What was your major?

I think that my major was Liberal Studies at that point.

Why did you choose FLC?

I chose FLC because I was living with aunt and uncle in El Dorado and was thinking of getting back into school after having dropped out and lived like a ski bum for about three years. The campus seemed very beautiful right from when my aunt pointed the school out, and I figured that taking a few classes part time at a community college was a a good way to ease back into going to school. In less than a year I started to qualify for financial aid and began attending full time.

What was the best part of your experience with FLC?

My favorite part of the school was definitely the teaching staff. The campus was beautiful, and the buildings were very modern and comfortable, however the staff really makes a school. I still brag to people all the time that I now attend a fairly prestigious university, and my professors are no more qualified than those that I had in community college. I had several teachers in different departments that were not only impressively qualified, but dedicated and inspiring to the point of developing personal relationships outside the classroom.

What are you particularly proud of that you accomplished with FLC?

One goal that I am proud of that I achieved while at FLC was to get my Real Estate License. All the needed classes were offered on campus, and the professor was immensely helpful in preparing for the state exam.

How do you feel Folsom Lake College helped prepare you for the future?

Overall, FLC did a great job preparing me for my future. After achieving my Associates Degree they helped give me a smooth transition to California State University, where I ended up getting my Bachelors in Business Administration.

What are you doing now?

Right now I am working on a masters degree in engineering at the George Washington University in Washington DC. My degree has a focus in crisis and emergency management. I plan to work with a department such as FEMA or the Army Corps of Engineers to help people prepare for, and recover from natural disasters. Anyway, I still miss FLC, I have great memories and friendships that will last for a long time. I wish everyone involved with the school the best, and hope to come back and visit soon!
