Nick Yell Represents FLC Well; Hopes to Return to State Championship Next Year

Folsom Lake College freshman golfer Nick Yell returned from the CCCAA State Championship in southern California on Wednesday with renewed motivation. "He's determined to make it back again next year," commented FLC coach Barry Zarecky. "He learned a lot from this trip, and I think he grew as a golfer." Nick shot rounds of 76/75 for a 36-hole total of 151, placing him in a tie for 24th place out of 43 golfers. Not bad for a young man who played so poorly the first two matches of the season (93 and 87) that he was pulled from the team's top six. He eventually worked his way back into the lineup and was a big reason the Falcons won the Big 8 Conference title. "Nick was our secret weapon. He always seemed to shoot a great score when we needed it most," noted Zarecky of the eventual NorCal individual champion.

Falcon Golf Team Swings & Misses, But Nick Yell Wins NorCal Championship Title

The FLC men's golf team had high hopes entering the NorCal Regional championship on Tuesday at Mayacama Country Club in Santa Rosa. The Big 8 Champs played well during the morning round while recording a team score of 381, emerging with a one stroke lead and knowing that just 18 holes stood between them and a trip to the State Championship tournament. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the wheels fell off in the afternoon round as they struggled in with a score of 405 (their worst round of the 2014 season), leaving them in fourth place and 8 strokes from a berth in the State Championship. While it was a huge disappointment for the team, there's always a silver lining: #6 player Nick Yell, a freshman, put up rounds of 74/72 (146) to WIN the Low Medalist title and earn a trip to the State Championship as NorCal Champion!
"Certainly not a good way to finish a great year," noted coach Barry Zarecky, "but having the individual NorCal Champion sure made it easier to take."

Golf Team Wins Final Big 8 Tourney; NorCals Next

On Tuesday March 11, the FLC men's golf team found themselves in 4th place in the Big 8 Conference standings after the first three tournaments. Since then, the Falcons won 7 of the final 9 tournaments (and took 2nd place in the other two), resulting in their second consecutive Big 8 Conference Championship. On Tuesday, they made it official with 5-stroke victory over Sierra in the final conference tournament of 2014 at Eagle Vines Golf Club in Napa. The win gave the Falcons a 16-point margin of victory over runner-up Sierra in the final Big 8 standings.

The Falcons were led by sophomore Jace Tiller's round of 73, followed by Dylan Neal and Brad Peil with 75 each. In spite of those good scores, FLC trailed Modesto by one stroke until #6 Nick Yell came in with a 76, giving the Falcons the victory. "I was glad to see we stayed focused even though we had such a big lead in the standings," noted Coach Barry Zarecky. "This was truly a great way to end league play and begin preparation for NorCals."

Four Falcon golfers earned All-Conference honors: Dylan Neal, Brad Peil, Jace Tiller, and Jordan Sato-Sterni. The team will now focus on the NorCal Championship at Mayacama Country Club (Santa Rosa) next Tuesday, where the top two teams qualify for the State Championship the following week in southern California.

Falcon Golfers Clinch Big 8 Title!

Playing on their home course under beautiful spring conditions, the FLC men's golf team did just enough to clinch their second straight Big 8 Conference championship yesterday with a second place team finish at Rancho Murieta Country Club. The Falcons' team score of 391 was 12 shots behind winner Sierra College and not the type of score coach Barry Zarecky had hoped for, but was enough to leave the with Falcons an unsurmountable 14 point lead with one tournament to play (12 points is the largest deficit that can be made up in one tournament). "We should shoot much better than we did on our home course," remarked coach Zarecky, "but it's nice to get that championship taken care of."

Sophomore Brad Peil had another nice round as he led the team with even par 72. "Bradley's on a nice roll. That's two straight great rounds from him," said Zarecky.

Falcon Golfers Continue to Roll; Close in on Big 8 Title

The FLC men's golf team didn't let Spring Break slow down the momentum they had built up over the last several weeks, winning yesterday's Big 8 Tournament #10 at Windsor Golf Club in Santa Rosa by two strokes over host Santa Rosa JC. The tournament victory was the Falcons' third in a row and they've now won 6 of their last 7. "This team has been absolutely amazing in getting the job done," remarked FLC head coach Barry Zarecky. The win increased the Falcons' lead in the Big 8 standings to 16 points (over Sierra) with just two matches to play. They can clinch their second Big 8 title in a row on their home course (Rancho Murieta) Thursday with a win or 2nd place finish. The Falcons were led by sophomores Brad Peil (73) and Dylan Neal (76), who recorded solid rounds while playing in very windy, challenging conditions.

FLC Golfers Find Victory Again

The FLC men's golf team continued their push toward a second straight Big 8 Conference championship with another tournament win yesterday at Oakmont Golf Club in Santa Rosa. The Falcons actually tied Sierra College for first with a team score of 370, so neither team was able to gain any ground on the other. Jordan Sato-Sterni shot a 2-under-par 70 to lead the Falcons, while Jace Tiller shot even par 72. The win allowed FLC to maintain their 12 point lead over Sierra in the conference standings with just three tournaments to play.

Falcon Golfers Win Again!

The FLC men's golf team was as hot as the weather yesterday on their way to winning Big 8 Conference Tournament #8 by seven strokes at Whitney Oaks Golf Club in Rocklin. The win was the Falcons' fourth tournament victory and extended their overall lead in the conference standings to 12 points with four tournaments left to play. Sophomores Brad Peil, Jace Tiller, and Jordan Sato-Sterni led the team with rounds of 74, 75, and 76, respectively. The Whitney Oaks course proved to be a tough challenge as no other Falcon golfer shot below 80. "Things did not look good for us on the front nine," noted Coach Barry Zarecky. "But once again, the boys rallied on the back. They made adjustments to the difficulty of the course and were able to secure the win."

Even though the FLC men's golf team didn't win yesterday's Big 8 Conference Tournament #7, the Falcons extended their overall lead in the Big 8 standings to nine points with a second place team finish at Ancil Hoffman Golf Club. Santa Rosa won the tournament with a team score of 380, seven shots ahead of FLC. Sophomore Jordan Sato-Sterni was the Falcons' low scorer with an even-par 72, in spite of some rough conditions on the greens.

Falcon Golfers Win Again!

The FLC men's golf team continued their run of success with another Big 8 Conference tournament win yesterday at Spring Creek Country Club in Ripon. The Falcons shot a team score of 382, eight shots ahead of second place Sierra College, in spite of a couple of poor scores turned in by their #2 and #3 players. Fortunately for the Falcons, #6 player Nick Yell shot a team-best 74 and #5 Greg Kuropat shot a lifetime best 76 to lead the team to victory. "This team is getting it done with outstanding teamwork," commented head coach Barry Zarecky. "I am more than proud of each of them."

Falcon Golfers Win Again, Take Over First Place in Big 8!

The FLC men's golf team started this week in fourth place in the Big 8 Conference standings; four days later, the Falcons stand alone atop the Big 8 with a two point lead over Sierra. The Falcons entered the week with the goal of taking over the lead and accomplished just that with two tournament victories. Yesterday's two-stroke win at Chardonnay Golf Club in Napa pushed the Falcons ahead of previous leader Modesto by three points. After two consecutive shaky rounds, FLC's #1 Dylan Neal found his game and shot a team-low 72. However, this tournament wasn't decided until the final groups finished. With three teams tied at 301 after five players were in, the Falcons' hero once again was #6 Nick Yell, who carded a 75 to clinch the victory for Folsom Lake.

Falcon golfers earn victory at Big 8 Conference Tournament #4

Del Rio Country Club (near Modesto) was the site of yesterday's Big 8 Conference men's golf tournament #4 and a Folsom Lake College victory. The Falcons shot 393, which was two strokes better than conference leader Modesto. The Del Rio course proved to be a tough challenge for all teams, as FLC was the only team with more than one player scoring in the 70's (FLC had 4). Jace Tiller led the charge for the Falcons on this day, shooting a 76. The Falcons trailed Modesto by one stroke until the final group finished, but with a 79 turned in by #6 Nick Yell, the win went to FLC. "That was just a gutsy effort, especially by Nick," said coach Barry Zarecky. The win shuffled the conference standings a bit, moving the Falcons into a tie for second at the 1/3 point in the Big 8 schedule.

Golfers Take Second

The FLC men's golf team improved one spot in their latest tournament, taking second place in Big 8 Conference Tournament #3 at Yolo Flyers Country Club last Thursday. The Falcons' team score of 384 trailed only Modesto (380) and tied with Santa Rosa. Brad Peil posted the Falcons' low score with a 74, followed by Jordan Sato-Sterni at 75 and Jace Tiller with a 76. The unfortunate news for the Falcons was the loss of #5 Greg French, who broke his collarbone (unrelated to golf) and is likely out for the season. Coach Barry Zarecky was still pleased that his team placed as well as it did considering the loss of a player and absorbing a poor round by #1 player Dylan Neal. "We'll need to step it up now with the loss of Greg; we almost did it on Thursday," commented Zarecky.

Golf Team Wins Again!

With the Big 8 Conference regular season set to resume this week, the FLC men's golf team used last Thursday's final practice match as a tune-up and took full advantage of the opportunity as they defeated conference rival Santa Rosa by two strokes at Oakmont Golf Club. The Falcons were led by sophomore Brad Peil, who shot a sparkling 69. According to Coach Barry Zarecky, it was the lowest score shot this year by any FLC golfer. Zarecky also commended his #5 and 6 golfers - freshmen Greg French and Nick Yell - as their solid rounds of 78 and 76, respectively, helped secure the win for the Falcons.

Golfers Continue Winning Ways in Practice Match

The FLC men's golf team grabbed yet another victory - their fourth of the young season - in a practice match at Ancil Hoffman Golf Club in Carmichael on Tuesday. The Falcons' team score of 388 edged Santa Rosa by 4 strokes (392) and easily defeated host American River (415). Dylan Neal and Jordan Sato-Sterni were the Falcons' low scorers at 76, but it was the play of #5 Greg French (78) and #6 Nick Yell (77) that earned the victory. The Falcons trailed Santa Rosa by six strokes after the first four groups had finished, but with the 78 and 77 turned in By Greg and Nick, they were able to turn it into a 4-stroke win. "This match was the perfect example of a team effort and I'm extremely proud of Nick and Greg," noted head coach Barry Zarecky.

Golfers Win Practice Match

The FLC men's golf team turned in a winning performance last Thursday in a practice match at Chardonnay Golf Club in Napa with all six golfers scoring in the 70's. The Falcons' team score of 372 easily defeated runner-up Napa Valley (389) and 3rd place Santa Rosa (393). The Falcons were led by Dylan Neal and Brad Peil with identical 73's, and Jordan Sato-Sterni & Nick Yell with 74's. "This is the type of consistency we need. Today we showed what we're capable of," commented coach Barry Zarecky.

Men's Golf opens Big 8 play

The men's golf team also opened their Big 8 Conference season Tuesday 2/18/14 with a tournament at Stockton Country Club. The Falcons finished third with a team score of 388, behind Sierra (365) and Modesto (371). Sophomore Dylan Neal was the low-score medalist with a 70. Unfortunately, only two other Falcons managed to shoot under 80. "We're a very inconsistent group of golfers right now," commented head coach Barry Zarecky. "If we hope to compete for the Conference title, we need to get consistent. There are four teams who will vie for the title, and I'm sure every week the standings will change. The one who wins will be the team that gets consistent play."

Falcon Sports Teams to Open 2014 Season Next Week

With the start of the spring semester comes a new season of Falcon Athletics; three Folsom Lake College teams will open their 2014 season next week. The men's golf team travels to Stanford on Monday to open at the Stanford Invitational Tournament.

Head Golf Coach Barry Zarecky is cautiously optimistic about his 2014 squad, saying "We've got some strong returning players in Dylan (Neal), Brad (Peil), Jace (Tiller), and Jordan (Sato-Sterni). How good we become as a team will depend on how well our 5th and 6th players do." Freshmen Greg French and Nick Yell will be asked to fill those spots when the Falcons play at Stanford on Monday.
