FLC Women's Soccer Team Finishes Inaugural Year with Success
Folsom, CA - Inaugural women's soccer program sets high standards by winning the Bay Valley Conference title with a conference record of 12-0-2; an overall record of 19-1-3, finishing in the sweet 16 of the California Community College state tournament.
When Folsom Lake College hired Donny Ribaudo, from Otero Junior College CO, as their new women's soccer coach this past February, he started the women's program from the ground up; determined to put together a competitive team from the beginning. The Falcons proved to be a spirited and hard working group of players; determined to work together and find success in their first season.
The team started intense training from day one, which was evident after their first couple games on the road. While on the road the Falcons beat Lassen College and Butte College, scoring a total of 6 goals in two games. From there they continued to find success and went 22 consecutive games undefeated. The Falcon's hard work had paid off.
The Falcons were ranked top 25 in the nation throughout the season and finished 16th overall. The Falcons finished first in their conference with a conference record of 12-0-2 and an overall record of 19-1-3. The team scored a total of 78 goals and had only 8 goals scored against them while playing against CCCAA competitors. While competing in the state tournament, the Lady Falcons hosted Feather River in the first round in an intense match ending dramatically in a penalty kick shoot-out. The second round hosted by San Francisco City College ended in a tough loss for FLC.
During the season, several players received recognition for their outstanding performance. Folsom Lake's forward Sam Madsen and graduate of Oak Ridge High School, was named California Community College Player of the Month during October 2013; she was the states leading goal scorer with 32 goals throughout the season and six assist.
The Bay Valley Conference first team awards went to forward Sam Madsen (League MVP), goalkeeper Alison Darr (Goalkeeper of the Year), center defender Anna Atteberry (Defender of the Year), forward Caitlin Castle, midfielder Danielle Otto, and outside defender Amberly Bole. The Bay Valley Conference second team awards went to midfielder Taylor Camin, center defender Rozzlyn Sovereign, and outside defender Chelsea Cunningham.
Coach Ribaudo is already looking at the 2014-2015 season with high expectations. "With a solid group of returning players, Folsom Lake College Women's Soccer will have even higher expectations for our second season," said Ribaudo. "This past season has set a good foundation for the program and the Falcons look forward to finding even more success in the upcoming years."
"I want to thank my assistant coaches Teri Akers and Martin Roberts, all the students and community fans for helping make this a great season. Everyone at Folsom Lake College has been very supportive throughout the season and myself and the team appreciated their support," said Ribaudo. "It was great having the student body and faculty members at the games to cheer the Falcons on," he said.
