Application Requirements

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION TO THE MLT PROGRAM

  1. Applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school in the United States or have successfully completed the General Education Development (GED) or California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE):
    • Students with a high school diploma from a school outside the United States must have transcripts evaluated by a National Association of Credential Evaluation. Services- (NACES-) approved independent agency1.  Such cases will be evaluated on an individual basis.
    • Students who possess an Associate of Arts/Associate of Science degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college are exempt from the educational requirement stated above.
  2. Students who have attended college outside the United States and who wish to have a degree or courses considered as meeting MLT Program prerequisites must have transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved independent agency. Such cases will be evaluated on an individual basis. Foreign students that have received a baccalaureate or higher degree in either Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or similar science-oriented degree (as certified by a NACES-approved independent agency) will be deemed to have satisfied the prerequisite course requirements in biology and chemistry, providing a detailed course evaluation report from the agency demonstrates such courses were required as part of the degree earned;
  3. Applicants to the program must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.50 or above in the following science prerequisites: AH 110 (Medical Language for Healthcare Providers), CHEM 400 and 401 (General Chemistry), BIOL 400 (Principles of Biology), STAT 300 (Introduction to Probability and Statistics);
  4. Applicants must have completed the following pre-requisite courses for A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology with a grade of C or better
    • AH 110, CHEM 400, CHEM 401, BIOL 400, STAT 300, COMM 321 (preferred) or, COMM 301 or COMM 331, FLC Reading Graduation Competency
  5. Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.0 in all college courses;
  6. Applicants must have completed COMM 321 (Interpersonal Communication) or COMM 301 (Introduction to Public Speaking) or COMM 331 (Group Discussion), and
  7. Applicants must have demonstrated FLC Reading Graduation Competency (see FLC catalog for details);
  8. Applicants are strongly encouraged to have satisfied the math competency for graduation from FLC (see FLC catalog for details).

*Students need not hold a phlebotomy license to apply to the MLT program at FLC. Student who already hold a valid and current phlebotomy license (CPT-1 license) will not be required to take MLT phlebotomy courses (MEDTEC310, MEDTEC311). Those who do not have a phlebotomy license will receive training in phlebotomy as required for MLT licensure; however will not be eligible to apply for a standalone phlebotomy license. 

 

NEW AND RETURNING APPLICANTS
For determination of prerequisite course equivalency for courses completed outside of the Los Rios Community College District, students must provide course descriptions (from the semester in which the courses were completed) as part of their application.
