Location: Main Folsom campus, Buckeye Hall FL3-173 (Large lecture hall)

When Leon Malmed's parents were arrested by the Nazis in 1942, their French neighbors offered to watch 5-year-old Leon, thinking it would be but a few days. Instead, his parents were taken to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp and never returned. Their downstairs neighbors continued to safeguard and protect Leon through roundups, threats, and air raids. Thanks to their care, he survived the Holocaust. After 60 years of silence about his WWII experiences, Leon has decided to share his story.

Carrera Productions presents The Magpie Salute with Guest The Stone Foxes

Date: 01/12/2019
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

The Magpie Salute is an exciting new band that features musicians who have played together for decades throughout various projects and share a musical bond. The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame -- guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien -- alongside drummer Joe Magistro, keyboardist Matt Slocum and lead singer John Hogg(Hookah Brown, Moke).

Following close to 80 appearances over the course of 2017, The Magpie Salute entered Dark Horse Studios in Nashville this past winter to record their debut release of original repertoire. That album will be released late-Summer. The band's performance in Folsom will feature these new songs alongside others culled from a catalog of over 200 compositions the band has played since their inception.

Rich stated, "We will continue in the long line of digging deep into my old Crowes' catalogue, some great covers, some we've done before, some we have never played, songs from my solo records and some of Marc's songs off of his new record." Marc believes that this variety in set list "keeps everything interesting to us" and asks, "If we weren't into it, how could the listeners be?"

The Stone Foxes are San Francisco's rock band. They bear the torch of their predecessors with the knowledge that rock 'n roll can move a new generation. February 2019

SBL Entertainment presents An Evening with Keiko Matsui

Date: 02/20/2019
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

Japanese keyboardist and composer Keiko Matsui is an icon of contemporary jazz, with more than 1.2 million albums sold in the U.S. alone and sold-out appearances at concert halls across the world. Her elegant melodies and gentle grooves have also won her a diverse and adoring fan base of New Age and jazz fusion enthusiasts.

"A master on the piano... boasting accessible jazz overtones and an acoustic sensibility" - JazzTimes

Matsui grew up in Tokyo and took her first piano lesson at the age of five. Influenced by Stevie Wonder and Rachmaninov as well as early fusion masters Maurice Jarre and Chick Corea, Matsui began composing while in junior high but studied children's culture at the Japan Women's University (Nihon Joshidaigaku). She moved to the Yamaha Music Foundation in Tokyo after graduation and formed Cosmos, recording four albums with the new age group. A contract with MCA in 1989 resulted in two albums, No Borders and Under Northern Lights.

Matsui moved to the White Cat label in 1992 and began charting in the contemporary jazz charts. Her 1995 album Sapphire hit number one on the charts, and its follow-up also reached the Top Ten the following year. Whisper from the Mirror followed in 2000; Deep Blue appeared the next year. The Ring from 2002 recalled the composer's classical background, while 2004's Wildflower flirted with world music. Walls of Akendora appeared in 2005 with a smooth jazz flavor and updated version of Matsui's early hit, "Mountain Shakedown." Moyo, an album that placed Matsui's piano in an orchestral setting, followed in 2007 on the Shout! Factory imprint.

From working at a golf course for less than minimum wage to getting punched in the face by his manager at a floating restaurant to getting up to all manner of mischief with the deep fryers at KFC, Jensen has made quite a career of not having a proper career. "With no 401k, no savings, no retirement account, these stories are the only return on my investment." Luckily, they're very good.
