    "Escaping the Holocaust"

    Date: 03/19/2014
Location: Folsom campus, Lilac Hall room FL5-113

Family Letters: Escaping the Holocaust- When her mother died at the age of 96, Susanne Sommer discovered letters and other documents stored away in folders, shoe boxes, closets and trunks. The correspondence described her parents' desperate efforts to leave Nazi Germany in 1938. At that time, the situation for Germany's Jews had become increasingly ominous, and most countries, including the United States, were hostile to receiving Jewish refugees. The letters describe a compelling story between her parents and a distant cousin in Arlington, Virginia who struggled to help them find a way out. Susanne compiled these letters and collaborated with a local playwright to write Echoes in the Heart. Presented by HIST 312 Class/Debbie Moreno.

Annotated Recipes: Where Meals Meet Stories

    Date: 03/06/2014
Location: Folsom campus, SOAR Central (Cypress Hall room FL2-238)

Announcing a collaborative creating writing workshop between the One Book Program and FLC's literary magazine, Falcon Scratch, where the focus is food!

Annotated Recipes: Where Meals Meet Stories

Most of us can rattle off a number of meals that left a lasting impression. Maybe there's a secret soup your family serves every third Thursday in March. Maybe it was the salad that started a family feud. Food permeates our lives, but we often let the stories associated with meals go untold; we forget stories create us like the tongue creates flavor. Reflecting on all the senses and events associated with the meals we can never forget, we'll create annotated recipes that reveal the foundation behind the food. Exact
measurements and ingredients don't matter as much as the feelings and experiences associated with the recipe.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome!

Once you've drafted, revised and edited, we invite you to submit your annotated
recipe to Falcon Scratch. Submission details and dates coming soon!

    "Food, Inc." screening

    Date: 04/21/2014
Location: Folsom campus, Community Room (Aspen Hall roo FL1-20)

Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of e coli--the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirschberg and Polyface Farms' Joe Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising -- and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. http://www.foodincmovie.com/. Film and discussion hosted by Professor Tracy Rauschkolb (English).

    Poetry Without Fear workshop

    Date: 04/03/2014
Location: Folsom campus, SOAR Central (Cypress Hall room FL2-238)

As a kid, did you play games to the beat of little poems you made up yourself? How many nursery rhymes can you remember? Can you recite or sing songs from The Lion King?

And have you been introduced to poetry in an English class? If you have, did anyone kill the fun of poetry for you? Did a teacher or other grownup pick apart your poem, or analyze a famous poem to death? Find out why former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins says that, in the classroom, a poem gets tied to a chair so people can beat the truth out of it with a rubber hose.

But in this workshop, there are no hard chairs, no rubber hoses. Rediscover the truth, beauty and fun of poetry-words in a state of play.

    Interrupted Line
    May 16 - July 6, 2014
    Bank of America Art Gallery

The space as a constructive tool --- the line as a guide to navigate it. Interrupted Line is the title of the first solo show by Argentinean artist Marcolina Dipierro (1978) on the West Coast. With exclusive works from the Sayago&Pardon Collection, Interrupted Line addresses the multiple ways in which space can be modified, altered, or interrupted with just a line, in a playful mode that resembles how life can be transformed or disturbed by everyday experiences. Dipierro works with a series of "objectual pieces" that consists of basic geometric elements: volumes, planes and lines made with simple materials. The use
of linear forms made with acrylic, wood and paper collages is constant in her works displayed at the gallery space.

    BIG Day of Giving

    Date: 05/06/2014
    Location:

We're happy to report that on Tuesday May 6th, the Los Rios Foundation and Folsom Lake College's Harris Center for the Arts will be participating in a national online giving event. Starting at midnight, the BIG Day of Giving will be a 24-hour-long online giving challenge where our community will come together to support almost 400 nonprofits in the greater Sacramento region. This is not only an incredible opportunity to raise unrestricted dollars for our students and colleges, but also a chance to show the strength and unity of the Los Rios Community College District family that works tirelessly each day to make our community an amazing place to live and work.

Please consider giving whatever you can afford to help support the Los Rios Community College District, and keep in mind that many local businesses and organizations have set up a pool of matching dollars, so every donation to the Los Rios Foundation or the Harris Center has the potential to go that much further. In the past, giving challenges like this have raised millions of dollars; now it's our turn to show the pride we have in the Los Rios Foundation and the Harris Center. For more information, simply go to www.givelocalnow.org. And, beginning at midnight Tuesday May 6th, take advantage of this opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to Los Rios and to the greater Sacramento region.
