    Human Library

    Date: 02/24/2016
    Location: El Dorado Center, Library

The Human Library is an international movement that promotes an inclusive way to challenge prejudice through social contact. Human libraries function similarly to other libraries except that in a human library, people-rather than books-are available for checkout. Those who volunteer to be human books are people with a particular personal experience or perspective on life and have often been stereotyped in some way. The human books agree to converse openly with other members of the community, called "readers." For example, you can check out various categories such as foster youth, veteran, jock, transgender person, or Muslim and learn more about that person, their life, and the challenges and stereotypes that they face. Readers are able to ask questions, seek advice, learn about alternate perspectives, and find common ground.

Based on 2000 year old Chinese wisdom, the book jacket states that this book explores "how humans can improve themselves and society". The Path presents ideas that seem counterintuitive - "upending everything we've been told about how to lead a good life. And its most radical idea is that there is no path to follow in the first place - just a journey we create anew at every moment." Join us as we discuss this book that is "a revelation, a practical way through a fractured, distracting world" (Evan Osnos).

During November and December the group will read "Stephen King / On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" by (of course!) Stephen King. The book jacket says this book is "part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time; this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer's craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. Brilliantly structured, friendly, [funny!!] and inspiring, On Writing will empower and entertain everyone who reads it - fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told".
