Legends of Legends of Hawaiian Music: Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono

Date: 01/25/2018
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

Keola Beamer & Henry Kapono are two legends of Hawaiian music. Each became an icon in the 1970s, at the creative forefront as Hawaiian music reinvented itself. They have continued to lead the way for over four decades.

Keola Beamer's contributions to slack key guitar during the 1970s began to spark public interest in kī-hō‘alu, launching a statewide revival of the tradition, and his 1978 release, Honolulu City Lights, is the largest selling recording in the history of Hawaiian music. Today he is one of Hawai‘i's premier singer-songwriters, arrangers, composers and masters of the Hawaiian slack key guitar.

Henry Kapono, with Cecilio Rodriguez, became the wildly popular phenomenon Cecilio & Kapono (aka C&K). They helped forge the sound of '70s Hawaiian music, with laid-back contemporary rock that voiced the feelings of an entire generation in Hawai‘i. Today as a solo artist, Henry is a Grammy-nominated and award-winning singer and songwriter.

Despite their common history, Keola & Henry first performed together in 2014, when Henry invited Keola & Moana Beamer to take part in Back in the Day. This wildly successful show featured Hawai‘i's musical greats who changed Hawaiian music, starting in the "Hawaiian Renaissance" of the 1970s-the seminal movement in Hawai‘i's cultural history that brought language, music, hula, art, and all aspects of Hawaiian culture back to their central place in the life of the Islands.

Keola & Henry will each perform a set, and then come together onstage to celebrate their original songs that have become beloved classics of contemporary Hawaiian music.

He is the founder of the Heroic Imagination Project that seeks to encourage and empower individuals to take heroic action during crucial moments in their lives.

Keynote Address - My Journey from Creating Evil to Inspiring Heroism
This talk traces Dr. Zimbardo's journey from childhood to his conduction of the Stanford Prison Experiment on the theme of the banality of evil, and his subsequent pivot of focus to the banality of heroism. His new mission is training people around the world to be wise and effective heroes who stand up, speak out and take action in challenging situations in their lives. By sharing his story, he inspires us to look within ourselves to find our own inner, everyday hero-in-waiting.

The Falcon's Eye celebrates the sixties counterculture in all its barefoot, long-haired, bell-bottomed, beaded and fringed glory with Gerome Ragni, James Rado and Galt MacDermot's HAIR. To an infectiously energetic rock beat, the show wows audiences with songs like "Aquarius," "Good Morning, Starshine," "Hair," "I Got Life," and "Let The Sun Shine." Exploring ideas of identity, community, global responsibility and peace, HAIR remains relevant as ever as it examines what it means to be a young person in a changing world.

Amazing Grace

Date: 04/01/2018
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

The awe-inspiring true story behind the world's most beloved song - captured in a Broadway musical. "The hymn, which many associate with the civil rights movement, was written in the 18th century by an Englishman who worked in the slave-trading business. Curious to know more?" (New York Times). Torn between following in the footsteps of his father - a slave trader - or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart, John Newton embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas, accompanied by his slave, Thomas. That journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning that inspires a blazing anthem of hope. "Inspirational, beautiful, emotional, exhilarating" (Associated Press).

Rodney Atkins with special guest Brodie Stewart Band

Date: 05/24/2018
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

Though country singer Rodney Atkins didn't get his first guitar until one Christmas in high school, he took to the instrument instantly and was soon playing anywhere he could around his Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, home. While at college at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Atkins used the opportunity to go into Nashville as often as he could, and by the time he graduated, he was starting to make himself known as a performer in the area. In 1997, he signed to Curb Records and was set to release his debut shortly after, but when he didn't like the finished results and label head Mike Curb gave him the go-ahead to record new songs, Atkinsspent the next two years working with various producers, engineers, and musicians for an album that would ultimately never see the light of day. He resurfaced, however, in 2003 with his true debut, Honesty, and three years later, If You're Going Through Hell, recorded in his home studio, came out. It's America arrived in 2009. Take a Back Road, Atkins' fourth studio album, appeared in 2011, led by the title track, one of that summer's most memorable singles (complete with a George Strait name check) and it became Atkins' fastest-rising single to date.

Oh Boy Records presents John Prine with Special Guest, Ramblin Jack Elliott

Long considered a "songwriter's songwriter," John Prine is a rare talent. Oh Boy Records is excited to announce that John Prine will release an album of original music in the Spring of 2018. Every ticket sold for shows on this tour will include a copy of John's new record upon its release (CD only). Al Stewart: Year of the Cat with special guests Empty Pockets

Date: 05/20/2018
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

Ask Al Stewart to sum up where he is now, musically speaking, and you're likely to wind up two steps behind where you started; this is by no means an unusual circumstance in conversation with Al, keenly aware as he is that making a leap forward often entails taking a step backward. Sometimes it's into the library stacks where the late historian Ms. Tuchman dug for material. Sometimes it's into the record stacks where the late rocker Mr. Cochran made his mark as a teenager singing his "Summertime Blues" so many summertime's ago. Al Stewart came to stardom as part of the legendary British folk revival in the 60s and 70s and developed the combination of folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events from history. Stewart has 19 studio albums between "Bedsitter Images" in 1967 and "Sparks of Ancient Light" in 2008, plus the live album "Uncorked" with Dave Nachmanoff in 2009. Al continues to tour extensively around the U.S. and Europe. He is perhaps best known for his hits ‘Year of the Cat" from the Platinum album of the same name and the Platinum follow up album "Time Passages." But his career spans four decades as a key figure in British music. He played at the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, worked with Yoko Ono pre-Lennon and shared a London apartment with a young Paul Simon.

Host of the Harris Center's annual Blues Harmonica Blowout, Mark Hummel returns to kick off the summer with a special acoustic folk blues celebration featuring an amazing lineup of talent. Guitarist/vocalist Joe Beard's roots are in Mississippi where he was born in 1938; his 1996 recording "Blues Union" earned Offbeat Magazine's Blues Album of the year award. The Deep Basement Shakers (here joined by Hummel) specialize in primal, joint-rockin' barrel house blues n' boogie, bringing to life deep musical traditions of bygone years of American roots music. The trio HowellDevine deftly mixes Delta/country blues with wildly syncopated rhythms to create a rollicking present day sound from the past. A special evening of acoustic blues honoring the roots of the music while sharing the work of practitioners at the forefront of the genre.
