Location: Folsom campus, Aspen Hall FL1-8

Occupy the Farm tells the story of 200 urban farmers who walk onto a publicly-owned research farm and plant two acres of crops in order to save the land from becoming a real-estate development. This direct action set up a vibrant tent village on land destined to become condos, while their crops blocked the development plans of a cash-starved public institution, the University of California, Berkeley. Their confrontational, yet hopeful tactic raises important questions: What are the most effective ways to bring healthy food to hungry, urban neighborhoods? And, who should control research and education at the world's most important public university: private interests or the public good?

Discussion about movement building with this local example of food justice and land grants from UC's Berkeley and Davis.

Location: Folsom campus, Falcon's Roost FR-240 (Peregrine Room)

This film weaves together expert analysis of America's food and farming system with a powerful narrative of one extraordinary farmer who is determined to create a sustainable future for his community. Marty Travis, a seventh-generation farmer from Illinois watched his land and community fall victim to the pressures of big agribusiness. Determined to create a proud legacy for his son, Marty transforms his profitless wasteland and pioneers the sustainable food movement in Chicago. The film unearths the future of agriculture - a marriage of age-old tradition and groundbreaking science. Industry pioneers from around the nation reveal the secrets behind human health and environmental protection. Woven into these stories are the foremost experts of the food industry - connecting the dots between agriculture, the environment, economics and public health. Their stories are a reminder of America's troubled past and the devastating consequences that await the country if left unchanged. Sustainable empowers audiences and gives them hope for the future - that through this food revolution, we can all save humanity. Film and discussion hosted by Professor Steve Holzberg.

This season's Broadway magic concludes at the Harris Center with a thrilling update of classic Broadway fare. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this unforgettable production is full of high-flying, death-defying acrobatics, wondrous magical feats and soaring songs from the composer of Wicked. Festa Italiana

Date: 06/04/2017
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

Think of Italy and you hear glorious music - serenading gondoliers, impassioned opera heroines, exulting choirs. You don't have to travel to enjoy these beautiful sounds - the Folsom Lake Symphony is devoting its season finale to the music of this inspiring country.

Conductor Peter Jaffe has compiled a repertoire that ranges from classical opera - which the Italians virtually invented - to traditional Neapolitan songs such as "That's Amore," movie themes by Italian composers, Gioachino Rossini's Overture to Semiramide and Capriccio Italien, a piece Peter Tchaikovsky wrote to celebrate a visit to Rome. Playlist includes "The Prayer," "O sole mio," "Nessum dorma," and much more.

An evening in Italy wouldn't be complete without vocalists, and this performance features three: soprano Yelena Dyachek, lyric tenor Eric Margiore and tenor Bradley Wisk

American pianist Jeffrey Siegel has been a soloist with the world's great orchestras and has collaborated with many of the pre-eminent conductors of our time. He has performed his Keyboard Conversations® at the Harris Center every year since the facility opened; the reasons for this are instantly obvious. In presenting these "concerts with lively commentary," Mr. Siegel offers comments on the work, the composer, even the times in which the work was composed, and then gives a virtuosic performance of a piano masterpiece. A lively Q&A concludes the concert. His presentations enrich the listening experience for the avid music lover as well as provide an inviting, instantly accessible introduction to great music for those new to classical music

Gary Zukav

Date: 08/12/2017
Location: Harris Center, Stage 1

For Americans, and as an entire species, this is a powerful era of expanded consciousness and our responsibilities in it are becoming unmistakable. We are beginning to recognize and understand the extent to which fear controls us, and are increasingly aware that cultivating love in ourselves is the only way that we can change the world.

During this special evening talk, Gary Zukav will share how our most challenging and painful experiences are rich opportunities to transform. From a five-sensory perspective, the dissolution of a relationship, health issues, political dissension, employment uncertainty, the death of a friend, and every other "unwanted" circumstance incite feelings of grief, outrage, despondency-all rooted in a false sense of powerlessness.

Multisensory perception allows us to look within, find the sources of our fears and respond to everything we encounter with compassion and reverence for Life.

We are all becoming multisensory. This is the age of awakening and of taking responsibility for what we are creating. It is an unprecedented time offering unprecedented potential. It is a time to Live Courageously.

George Winston grew up mainly in Montana, and also spent his later formative years in Mississippi and Florida. His favorite music was instrumental rock and instrumental R&B including Floyd Cramer, the Ventures, Booker T & The MG's, Jimmy Smith, and many more. Inspired by R&B, jazz, blues and rock (especially The Doors), George began playing organ in 1967. In 1971, he switched to the acoustic piano after hearing recordings from the 1920s and the 1930s by the legendary stride pianists Thomas "Fats" Waller and Teddy Wilson. In addition to working on stride piano, he also at this time came up with his own style of melodic instrumental music on solo piano, called folk piano. His main influences currently are the New Orleans R&B pianists Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Henry Butler.
