#GivingTuesday

FLC PISO
November 28, 2017

Students from the Los Rios Colleges will join the global #GivingTuesday campaign on Tuesday, November 28 with events at all four colleges that underscore the generosity of the Los Rios community. Activities at the colleges will include food drives with local partners like Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, a blood drive with BloodSource, and "Gratitude" and "UNselfie" stations for students, faculty and staff.

Many Los Rios college students face insecurity while attending one of our colleges, including not knowing where their next meal is coming from or where they will sleep at night. It is difficult to be a student and focus on school when experiencing such instability. A national survey found that 13% of community college students are homeless, half of community college students are at least marginally food insecure or experiencing anxiety about the availability of food, and that 22% had gone hungry without money to buy food (Hungry to Learn: Addressing Food & Housing Insecurity Among Undergraduates conducted by Goldrick-Rab et al.)

The goal of #GivingTuesday is to raise funds to help students at all four colleges who are experiencing insecurity due to a sudden emergency. The Los Rios Student Emergency Fund provides immediate financial assistance to students involved in emergency situations so that they can continue their progress towards their educational goals. There is a matching fund for gifts given on Giving Tuesday through the generous donations of Los Rios District and College leadership, the Los Rios Foundation Board and Wells Fargo. Donations from the community are welcomed and can be made online at foundation.losrios.edu/givingtuesday.

The Los Rios Foundation has awarded $165,156 to 245 students at American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake and Sacramento City colleges. These grants included students who were homeless, students who lost family members or whose homes were destroyed by fire, students who couldn't afford to feed their families or who were the victims of violent crimes, and yet they were determined to finish the education they had started at Los Rios.
