You Can't Take It With You

Falcon's Eye Theatre
October 20, 2016

The Falcon's Eye opens its tenth season with Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's You Can't Take it With You. With its spirited defense of lives lived for sheer joy rather than for achievement, ambition, financial gain or rank, this 1936 Pulitzer Prize winning play proved an escapist tonic in the midst of the Great Depression. The prototype for countless comedies about wacky families blithely out of step with the world around them, this giddy romp is a perennial favorite.

When Tony Kirby, the son of a straight-laced business family falls in love with Alice Sycamore, the daughter of a wildly unorthodox and artistic family, a dinner is planned in an attempt to seamlessly weave the two clans together. Worried that Tony's family might find her own a bit shocking, Alice goes to great lengths to ensure that her unconventional tribe is well-received. When the Kirby family arrives for dinner a night early, all bets are off and the true nature of Alice's family is on display, inciting chaos and threatening the future of Tony and Alice's union.

You Can't Take it With You has been noted as among the most culturally influential comedies of the century. It has inspired countless wacky family comedies, such as The Munsters TV show and the film The Royal Tennenbaums. Kaufman and Hart's character icons can be found everywhere in American Culture. Coming at just the right moment for a Depression-weary America, this comic masterpiece has become a touchstone in the fabric of our society.
