"I love when the students who thought they weren't good at math get A's on the exams. I love sharing their joy."

How do you help students with their math phobia?

I advise students to rework the homework problems until they feel comfortable. Only when they don't need to look up anything when working problems are they ready for the test. If they are frequently getting wrong answers, asking their friends, or using the solutions manual, they are not ready yet and should continue to study. Most textbooks have reviews at the end of the chapters, and I highly recommend working problems from these as well. Also, asking friends and/or the teacher helps lots!!!

What advice would you give to a new college student?

Do your homework!!! Go to office hours as needed.

What's the favorite part of your job?

Getting to know the students, joke with them, and talk about the important things.

What was your proudest moment working with students?

I love when the students who thought they weren't good at math get A's on the exams. I love sharing their joy.

Bethany Watson has her B.A.and M.A. from CSU, Sacramento.
