Current FLC Student majoring in Administration of Justice
"I would encourage new students to get involved with campus clubs; ...[it] provides you with real world experiences that can be applied towards your major and leadership development."
When did you start taking classes with Folsom Lake College (FLC)?
I took my first class at FLC in the fall of 2007. Before attending Folsom Lake College, I graduated from Independent Learning Center in Placerville. I finished my high school diploma early and wanted to get into college right away to work on my future goals.
What is your major?
I'm currently majoring in Administration of Justice.
Why did you choose FLC?
I chose FLC because of the location and the beautiful and safe campus. Also, my dad had taken a couple of classes at the college and he told me about his great experiences there with the professors and helpful staff.
What was the best part of your experience with FLC?
The best part of my experience at FLC was the exploration of choosing a major and finding the field of study that I was truly passionate about. I was unsure of what I wanted to major in when I first arrived at FLC; I was encouraged by my counselor to seek out some introductory classes to expose me to different majors in order to spark an interest. I took several introductory classes and after finishing the Introduction to Administration of Justice; I knew it was the right path for me.
What are you particularly proud of that you accomplished at FLC?
I am particularly proud of all the work that I have done for the Administration of Justice Club. I have worked extensively with the club on fundraisers, events, and community service work. I have been involved with the Administration of Justice Club for a year now, and I'm proud to say that I'm the Vice President of Social Media for the club. I would encourage new students to get involved with campus clubs; it's a great way to meet new people that have similar interests and provides you with real world experiences that can be applied towards your major and leadership development.
How do you feel Folsom Lake College helped prepare you for the future?
Folsom Lake has helped me prepare in numerous ways. I found the counselors here are always willing to help students get on the right track to achieving their goals. Chris Clark, a counselor at FLC, was instrumental in my success by offering guidance to help me develop my major and finish my classes in a timely manner. The majority of the professors are very nice and willing to help you understand the subject. Ben Krohn and Tony DiCicco, professors in Administration of Justice, kept me engaged and offered many rewarding experiences in my major. FLC offers great opportunities to its students through student services. If it wasn't for financial aid and the federal work study program, I would have never been able to make it through college. I worked as a student assistant in the Disabled Student Programs and Services for two semesters and I was able to help many students achieve success in that department. I recently joined the Student Ambassadors, and it has really helped me come out of my shell. I'm learning leadership qualities from the program and it has also helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. It's great to be able to be able to share all the wonderful things FLC has to offer with incoming students.
What are your future goals when you graduate from FLC?
I've already been accepted and am excited to start CSU, Sacramento in the fall of 2011. I plan on getting my Baccalaureate Degree in Criminal Justice and then join the police department as a patrol officer for a couple of years. One day I would like to become a detective.
