Transferred to Samuel Merritt School of Nursing in 2009
"I've also really enjoyed the small class sizes-- professors know students by name and students are able to actively participate in lecture and have questions answered immediately."
When did you start taking classes with Folsom Lake College (FLC)?
I started taking courses with FLC in Fall 2007.
What was your major?
I have an undeclared major as I have been taking courses to supplement my Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from UC Davis. The courses I am taking are prerequisites for nursing school that I did not take while at Davis.
Why did you choose FLC?
I chose FLC because it is within 15 minutes of my home and FLC offered the courses I was interested in. I have also heard good things from past students about the quality of education.
What was the best part of your experience with FLC?
Coming from a UC to a JC, the best part of my experience was definitely the realization that for a small price, FLC offers quality instruction that helps prepare students for university-level coursework. I've also really enjoyed the small class sizes-- professors know students by name and students are able to actively participate in lecture and have questions answered immediately. I strongly believe that the more personal experience students receive at FLC really helps with the learning process. In addition, most, if not all, professors at FLC are really focused on teaching their material. They are committed to the success of their students.
What are you particularly proud of that you accomplished with FLC?
During my student career at UCD, my grades were not quite up to par. When I came to FLC, I was determined to excel in all the courses I took as well as to gain admission to a masters entry nursing program. I am proud to say I was able to achieve A's in all courses I have taken while at FLC and I have achieved my goal of gaining admission into a masters entry nursing program.
How do you feel Folsom Lake College helped prepare you for the future?
FLC has a wonderful faculty committed to the success of their students and genuinely interested in helping students learn the subject matter. The courses I have taken have all been comparable to UC coursework.
What are you doing now?
I am finishing up my last prerequisite with FLC in preparation for Samuel Merritt College Masters Entry Program in Nurse Practitioning that begins January 5th of 2009. I was recently notified of my admission and I am overjoyed!!! I am also thankful to the FLC professors who have contributed to my success. In particular Professor Paul Krieg and Professor Linda Abraham who are both high quality instructors and who both wrote me letters of recommendation for this program. The program with Samuel Merritt is a 3 year program that allows me the ability to receive my RN in the first 16 months and to receive licensure as a Nurse Practitioner upon completion.
Samuel Merritt is great. I am doing really well. I am over halfway through my first semester. Our clinical rotation this semester is in Mental Health which is interesting. I am loving every minute of it and am so grateful to be in a nursing program because I know how difficult it is to get into programs these days.
