When did you start taking classes with Folsom Lake College (FLC)?
I first started classes in the spring of 2009. I had decided to make a change in the direction of my professional goals. I had not been in school for fifteen years, but I had something this time around that I did not have in high school, desire! I jumped in head first with twelve units, and I have not slowed down.
What is your major?
My major is in Fire Technology
Why did you choose FLC?
Folsom Lake College has multiple sites, so living in Placerville, it just made sense to attend FLC-El Dorado Center. In the past five semesters I have attended other colleges in the Los Rios College district, but none have the beauty and atmosphere I find at FLC and its centers.
What was the best part of your experience with FLC?
I have enjoyed the bonding and networking with like-minded individuals. With all the clubs, events, and subcultures that exist on campus, the experience has been motivational. Opportunities to hangout, debate, help refine the FLC experience through outreach programs, view music/dance performances, create new programs that enrich the college experience, and much more present themselves on a daily basis at the campus.
What are you particularly proud of that you accomplished with FLC?
I have been amazed by the accomplishments afforded me through FLC. I have been named one of 2011's valedictorians. I was granted the privilege of sitting on the advisory board of the Fire Technology and E.M.T. programs. This allowed me to help shape the future and direction of these programs to better serve future students. My involvement with college resources has involved me in the development of new programs to better serve future student needs. The thing I am most proud of though is that I've accomplished this as a single father of three amazing children.
How do you feel Folsom Lake College helped prepare you for the future?
Folsom Lake College has prepared me for the future in various ways. I have received excellent instruction from my professors that remain current on existing and future trends in the fire service. The professors have stretched me intellectually; proving to myself that I can succeed under pressure and deadlines. A career in the fire service requires the ability to speak publicly. I now, through many class presentations, have a comfort in front of audiences. In fact I got to be a guest speaker in a career development class. Sitting on the Fire Technology and E.M.T. advisory board has brought me in contact with current industry personnel that are part of the hiring process of their respective departments; increasing my chances of employment in the future. Thank you Folsom Lake College!
What are your plans for the future?
Next on the agenda is attending the California Regional Fire Academy through ARC and Sacramento Metro Fire. I have recently received my acceptance letter, and I am currently completing the necessary tasks to start the first day prepared.
