Current FLC Student majoring in General Education Transfer
"I love the fact that there is something new to do on campus every week."
When did you start taking classes with Folsom Lake College (FLC)?
I first started taking classes in the fall of 2009. I had been living in California for about two years and was not really doing anything positive with my life. I always wanted to go to college, but didn't think I could afford it. One day when I was at work, during the summer, I met up with one of my old middle school classmates and she told me how she was going to transfer soon to CSU, Sacramento from a community college. She explained the financial aid process and how she was able to afford college. Right then and there I knew I had to register for school.
What is your major?
My major is Veterinary medicine, specifically Equine medicine. I have loved horses since I was very young, so it seemed only natural for me to study them full time. FLC has the required lower division courses in order for me to transfer to UC Davis.
Why did you choose FLC?
I chose Folsom Lake because I was familiar with the area. Also, I visited the campus during my junior year of high school and thought it was beautiful, not to mention a lot of my friends attended FLC and raved about the great professors, which was a major deciding factor.
What was the best part of your experience with FLC?
I love the fact that there is something new to do on campus every week. I think that people underestimate how important it is to be involved with your school and community when you are attending a community college. With the new theater up and running, you could attend one of the awesome shows. There are flyers up all over campus advertising activities put on by the student body and the community. One thing that I utilize year round is the bulletin board in front of the library; shows, activities, books for sale, job postings and tons of things for sale are always tacked up on the board.
Over the years, I've had plenty of people ask me if I think that going to FLC is wasting time I could be spending at Davis and my answer is always, no! I am taking the same undergraduate classes here that I would be taking at Davis, the instructors and equipment I use in the classroom is top notch. Also, I have the BOG fee waiver, which waives the fees for my classes. My amazing FLC counselor, Juan Flores, told me about the guaranteed transfer agreement that allows me a guarantee to UC Davis as long as I meet their requirements.
What are you particularly proud of that you accomplished at FLC?
My biggest achievement is my grades. I made honors last semester! It feels really good to be in a place where you feel like you're thriving and being surrounded by people that want to help you get to where you want to be in life. FLC has counselors that help you track your progress and plan for up and coming semesters and professors that are more than willing to help you understand the curriculum.
How do you feel Folsom Lake College helped prepare you for the future?
I feel like Folsom Lake College allowed me an easier transition into the college lifestyle than if I had just gone straight into the university system. I knew that college wasn't like high school but I didn't fully realize how big of an impact that it would have on my day to day life. In high school you have teachers that allow you to make up tests and homework if you're absent for a while, and for the most part you may study the same subject for weeks at a time. In college, the curriculum is extremely fast-paced. Missing a day may be the equivalent to missing a week of a high school class. FLC has given me a lot of valuable tools and tips that I can use for graduate school. One example of that would be to make sure to register for the classes you need the second they become available to you in order to get the schedule that you want. It is also helpful to have a counselor design an educational plan and meet with them every semester so that you can stay on top of your goal.
What are your future goals when you graduate from FLC?
When I transfer from FLC, I plan to attend UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, with honors. My ultimate goal is to work for Loomis Basin as one of their Veterinarians practicing general medicine. This summer, I am volunteering with them to get some experience firsthand with one of their veterinarians. I have truly enjoyed my experience at Folsom Lake College and I will continue to be an advocate for FLC and the community college experience as a whole.
