Current FLC Student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies
"To me, the significance of education is paramount to my future goals and aspirations in life."
When did you start taking classes with Folsom Lake College (FLC)?
I began taking classes at Folsom Lake College in the fall of 2009. I recently graduated from Cordova High School and wanted to promptly enroll in classes at FLC because it was important for me to continue my education. To me, the significance of education is paramount to my future goals and aspirations in life.
What is your major?
I am majoring in Social Work. My intention is to help children who are the victims of abuse, abandonment, and neglect. The general education courses that I took at FLC helped me recognize my strengths in English, Sociology and Psychology. Through many weeks of deliberation, I finally concluded that my aptitude in these subjects is perfectly suited for social work. Coupled with my interest and passion in the field, social work became the best fit for me.
Why did you choose FLC?
I chose FLC for the great learning resources it had compared to other community colleges. The free student services, such as the Reading and Writing Center and the Tutoring Center promoted support and encouragement to extend my abilities in English and Math. I admired how these kinds of resources on campus exemplified the college's commitment to assist students with their struggles within the core subjects. I also chose FLC because of the beautiful features of the campus. Knowing that I get to go to a college that looks incredibly stunning enlightens me and makes me feel better about going five days a week. I chose to attend FLC because it was a convenient drive. In addition, the short and traffic-free drive and gorgeous campus is worth it to me.
What was the best part of your experience with FLC?
The best part of my experience at FLC is the relationships I have developed with the faculty and staff because they genuinely care about student success. Creating one on one relationships with my professors has made class more fun and encouraged me to be more active during lectures. Their support and willingness to be involved has increasingly influenced my desire to learn. I also enjoyed my HCD 310 (College Success) class. This class gave me a significant amount of information about how to be a successful student and it informed me about all the educational, social, & personal aspects an average student faces in college. Taking that class has opened my mind to all sorts of tips to help me succeed, not only in college, but also in life. I suggest people take this class during their first year to obtain a prosperous experience at Folsom Lake College.
How do you feel Folsom Lake College helped prepare you for the future?
The programs, faculty, and staff have made a major impact on my future with their ability to assist me to obtain my educational goals. The EOP&S program along with the Financial Aid Department is dedicated to helping students attend college. The EOP&S staff, specifically Katie Abbott, made sure I met my requirements every semester to thrive in the program and I definitely benefitted from the resources they offered. The financial aid department answered all of my questions to receive financial aid to afford most of my college expenses. I definitely benefitted from both programs while I attended FLC. Also, the faculty has better prepared me for my future by simply being there for me when I needed their help. Camille Snow specifically played a major role in guiding me on the right path to college success.
What are your future goals when you graduate from FLC?
I plan to transfer to California State University, Sacramento for my baccalaureate degree in Social Work after I graduate from FLC. I would also like to continue my education at University of California, Berkeley to receive my Masters in Social Work.
