Maureen Nnowalue
Current FLC Student majoring in Computer Science

"Folsom Lake College really prepares students for coursework at the university level."

Maureen Nnowalue

When did you start taking classes at Folsom Lake College (FLC)?

I started taking classes in Fall 2008, right after graduating from Folsom High School.

What is your major?

I've changed my major several times, but I eventually decided on Computer Science. Going to FLC helped me discover a major that worked for me. I chose Computer Science because I have always excelled at math and computer-related classes. The computer science field is extremely broad and you can work in almost any industry.

Why did you choose FLC?

I chose Folsom Lake College because of the location and cost. I also liked that I could take most general education and lower division classes at Folsom Lake College and then transfer to a university. Additionally, there were guaranteed transfer agreements to a few universities that I wanted to transfer to. For instance, FLC offers guaranteed admission to UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. I eventually decided to just go to CSUS, but I believe that the education I received at Folsom Lake College definitely prepared me for the 4-year university.

What was the best part of your experience with FLC?

FLC offered several classes at various times that I could choose from. I liked that you could take classes two days a week and have the rest of the week off to work, study, participate in activities, or hang out with friends. It was also great that FLC had numerous online classes available if there was no room in your schedule. Classes like Physical Anthropology and Communications Media are just a few of the general education classes that you can take online. Another great part about FLC is that most of the teachers are very friendly and laid back. Professor Samples, a chemistry teacher at FLC, was great! It was good to have a teacher that could make my least favorite subject seem interesting.

How do you feel FLC helped prepare you for the future?

Attending FLC allowed me to take my time to choose a major. I gained a lot of knowledge, maintained a high GPA, and developed stronger studying skills. Folsom Lake College really prepares students for coursework at the university level. I personally want to thank Chris Clark for all he has done to prepare me for my future; I have worked with him as an assistant in the Transfer Services Department. My favorite experience was helping put together the Transfer Day Event at FLC.

What are you doing now?

Right now, I am finishing up my last semester at FLC. I am still working in the Transfer Services Department on campus before I transfer to CSU, Sacramento. Working on campus is great because my hours are flexible with my schedule and I have enjoyed getting to know all my coworkers.

What would you like to do after you attend FLC?

I am transferring to CSUS in Spring 2011. My goal is to graduate with a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Digital Media. After that, I plan on starting my professional career and going to graduate school.
