Application Deadlines

If you are a new student who is currently out of the U.S. and will need to go through the F-1 visa application process, you should plan to apply at least three months before the start of the semester. The following deadlines apply:

Fall Semester: April 15th      Spring Semester: November 15th      Summer term: April 15th

It is important to remember that the issuance of an I-20 does not always guarantee that you will receive your F-1 visa. Please plan to apply early enough in case there is a delay with your documentation or difficulty in getting an appointment at the consulate.

According to F-1 regulations, international students who are entering the U.S. for the first time on an I-20 cannot enter the country more than 30 days prior to the start of the semester. For example, if the semester begins on August 15th, you will not be able to enter the U.S. before July 15th. For new students this may represent a problem in getting the classes that you want for the first semester as registration normally begins at least 2 months prior to the start of the semester. You will need to work with your counselor closely as soon as you arrive in the U.S.

If you are currently in the U.S. attending school at another institution as an international student in F-1 status, the following application deadlines apply:

Fall Semester: May 1      Spring Semester: December 1     Summer term: May 1

Please be sure to inform your current school that you are transferring to Folsom Lake College. Also, make sure that you submit all of the required documents for the I-20 issuance, including transfer form, to the Admissions & Records office by the above dates.

If you are currently in the U.S. and are in a status other than F-1, you may need to change your status in order to study in the U.S. A change of status can be both time-consuming and expensive. There are two options to change your status. The first is to leave the U.S. to apply for the F-1 visa in your home country and re-enter the U.S. in F-1 status. The other option is to apply for a change of status through the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services. Depending on your current status, there are some important considerations:

    a. B1 or B2 status: If you are in the u.S. on a visitor's or business visa and would like to become a student in the U.S., you must apply for and receive your change of status before you can begin your program. This can take a long time and the change of status is not always guaranteed.

    b. F-2 status: If you are in the U.S. as a dependent of an F-1 student, you will need to change your status in order to pursue a degree program. It is important that you apply for and receive the change of status before you being the program.

If you are in another status (J-1, J-2, H-1B, H-4, etc.), please consult with the International Student Advisor concerning your options. ALL applicants who need to apply for a change of status in the U.S. should apply as early as possible. The following deadlines apply:

Fall Semester: April 15th      Spring Semester: November 15th      Summer term: April 15th
