Petition Process
FLC Petitions must be submitted to a specific Admissions and Records individual for tracking and processing purposes.
Here is a partial list of the petitions counselors may encounter:
Academic Renewal Request Form:
- Student wishes to discount a course in which they have a 'D" or 'F" grade.
- Counselor reviews students records to see if student qualifies for academic renewal.

General Education Substitution Petition:
- Counselors use this form to request the use of a course to meet FLC GE requirements. This form is not necessary when the course can be 'passed along' (is used in the same GE area at the originating college.
- This form can also be used to request to use courses in the following Interdisciplinary majors: Arts and Humanities, Communication and English, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Math and Science and Understanding and Development.
- Counselor submits petition to the counseling clerk who then tracks it and forwards to the GE Sub Committee Chair.
Petition for Course Substitution & Waiver:
- This petition goes to the Counseling Clerk for tracking purposes.
- A copy of the petition will be emailed to the student once the petition request has been approved or denied.
- Counselors will receive an electronic copy of the petition.
Exceed Unit Petition:
- Used by students wishing to take more than 18 units in the Fall or Spring semester or over 8 units in the summer.
- Counselor needs to review student's academic history to determine likelihood of success. Counselor reviews with student, fills out recommendation and signs petition.
- Student turns in petition with an attached add/drop request form at front desk.
Late Add Petition:
- This petition is for students trying to add a course after the add deadline
- No counselor signature is required
Student Petition (General):
- General petition used by students who wish to (after regular deadline) drop with a 'W', drop with no notation, drop for refund, petition for pass/no pass and other reasons
- No counselor signature required.
Student Petition for Readmission After Dismissal:
- Jill Morrison and Camille Snow will process all dismissal petitions.
Substandard Grade - Repeat Notification Form:
- Used when a student has repeated a course in which he/she had earned a D or F.
- Counselor signature required if student is using a course from outside of the Los Rios Community College District.
Time Conflict/Class Overlap Petition:
- Used when student wishes to take 2 or more classes that overlap in meeting time.
- Student must get approval from instructor. Instructor signature required
- No counselor signature is required.
