Steps to Success

Step 1: Admission
Complete the application online here.

Step 2: Assessment/Orientation
The purpose of an assessment test is to determine your present skill level in reading, writing and math. Assessment results, along with other information will be used by counselors to help you select the most appropriate courses. At Orientation, you receive vital information about Folsom Lake Center/El Dorado Center/Rancho Cordova Center and tips for a successful first semester.

Obtain a list of assessment/orientation dates and times in the student services office or online. Choose a convenient date and arrive at the designated location with a number 2 pencil and photo I.D. No sign up is required. Allow 3-4 hours for completion of the math and English assessments. Your scores will be available the next day.

Step 3: Planning your first semester
Read the Student Guidebook, available in Student Services. You may plan your first semester on your own using the guidebook to assist you, or you may see a counselor for assistance. If you plan to see a counselor, which is always advisable, complete "Preparing For Your Counseling Appointment" in the guidebook.

Step 4: Counseling
See a counselor if you wish to have assistance planning your first semester. You may also want to see a counselor to discuss your assessment results, career plans, transfer plans, or concerns relating to your academic success. Bring completed Preparing For Your Counseling Appointment documents, transcripts and assessment scores with you. Contact the Student Services Office for counseling hours and appointments.

Step 5: Registration
You are now ready to enroll in your classes at Folsom Lake College and/or El Dorado Center.

Step 6: Financial Aid
Apply for Financial Aid in the Student Services office or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The process takes between four to six weeks, so begin the process as early as possible.

Step 7: Follow-up
Prior to or during your second semester, it is helpful to meet with a counselor again to review your progress and update your educational plan.
