Peer Mentoring

Who are Peer Mentors?

FLC Peer Mentors support first year students as they embark on their journey through higher education.  Peer Mentors assist new, first year students by serving as a resource to the Folsom Lake College campus. Mentors meet with students, both in groups and individually, to address questions and/or concerns that may arise as students navigate their first year of college. Mentors provide essential and valued support and work in conjunction with Folsom Lake College faculty, staff, and administrators with student success in mind.

FLC students who are participating in Summer Bridge and First Year Experience (FYE) programs are assigned a Peer Mentor who will help these new students become familiar with the Folsom Lake College campus and how to connect with faculty as well as support programs and services as needed. Peer Mentors gain valuable skills through their collaboration with faculty, leading mentoring groups, designing and implementing programming, and connecting with a diverse group of students.

Mentors and Summer Bridge

During this program, students will be enrolled in HCD 310: College Success, earning 3 units of credit for graduation and transfer.  Mentors will be working closely with HCD faculty and will be responsible for developing and leading team building activities, workshops, and presentations during the 4 week program.  Additionally, Mentors will meet with their assigned students in small groups. As needed, individual connections are made with students in need of additional support.

Mentors and First Year Experience

This program places students in learning communities which are made up of English and math courses based on assessment results, and a Freshman Seminar course. Mentors work closely with faculty from all classes in the learning community and are assigned a group of 7-10 FYE students to meet with regularly in order to provide insight, encouragement, and appropriate support.  Mentors are assigned a section of HCD 315: Freshman Seminar course as a part of their work day.  This course is taken by all FYE students in the Fall semester.  Mentors work closely with faculty in order to facilitate discussions, lead activities, and present on various topics in the class.
